target games:

BOCCE

Court

  • Bocce can be played in any open space.

  • Players play at alternating ends of the field after each frame.

Equipment

  • 1 pallino

  • 8 bocce balls (2 colours)

  • 10 pylons to mark boundary lines (recommended)

  • Adaptation: Frisbees or bean bags may be used instead of bocce balls

Gameplay

  • Set up two teams:

    • 1 player per team = 4 balls per player

    • 2 players per team = 2 balls per player

    • 4 players per team = 1 ball per player

  • Toss a coin (or play Rock-Paper-Scissors).The winner decides who goes first, or chooses the ball colour.

  • The first player throws the pallino (white target ball) past the centre line. This player also throws the first bocce ball.

  • The opponent throws the next bocce ball and teams alternate until all balls are on the field, indicating the end of a frame.

  • Players can underhand throw, or roll the bocce ball to: (A) get their ball closest to the pallino, (B) move the opponent’s ball, or (C) move the pallino.

  • At the end of a frame, collect all the balls and play back the opposite way.

Scoring

  • In each frame (round), only 1 team can score.A game consists of several frames, which are played from alternating ends of the field.

  • The team that scores points has at least one ball closest to the pallino. One point is given for each bocce ball that is closer to the pallino than the opposing team’s ball.

  • A game ends when a team scores a pre-determined score (e.g., 12 points), or when time has elapsed and one team has a greater score.

Faults

  • The pallino must be tossed past the centre line and before the 4 foot line.

  • If the ball is rolled of bounds, the ball is retrieved and the opponent gets to toss.

  • For safety, players are asked to stay off of the field while balls are being tossed during play.
